It is a part of Transhimalaya in Tibet & lies near the source to longest rivers in Asia like Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra and Karnali River. It is the spiritual centre for four great religions: Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, Jain religion and the Pre-Buddhist animistic religion - Bongo.
Lake Mansarover lies near Mount Kailash which also has religious importance. It is the combination of two word “Manas” & “Sarover” meaning Mind & Lake respectively. According to Hindu mythology it is regarded as the first lake created in the mind of Lord Brahma.
Every year thousands of pilgrims travel to Mount Kailash on believing their good fortune and wash the sins. Those who drink from the Lake Mansarover are believed to go to residence of Lord Shiva after death. This tradition dates thousands of years back.
