Nepal Celebrating Janai Purnima festival

Nepal Celebrating Janai Purnima festival

Nepal celebrates hundreds of religiously and socially important festivals throughout the year. Among them, Janai Purnima (Janai means sacred thread and Purnima means full moon) is the sacred thread festival practice by Hindu followers.

On the month of Shrawan; Hindu men, especially from Brahmins and Chettries community do their annual change of Janai and every other put this sacred thread around their wrist. This year, Nepal is celebrating this sacred festival on 10th of August.

People believe that if one ties this sacred thread by the Brahmin priest, they will earn virtue and blessing from the God for auspicious life as the thread is venerated as a feature of Lord Vishnu.

Janai Purnima is also called Rakhi Purnima or Rakshya Bandhan. In this day, sisters tie Rakhi on the wrist of their brothers which indicates love and affection shared between them. They pray for long life, care and protection of each other, so called Rakshya bandan.

This day is also characterized as Kwati Punhi. Mainly in the Newar community, people cook a special food item of nine beans called Kwati. It is supposed that the energetic hot soup of this mixture prevents us from every disease.

In the climatic context, Janai Purnima indicates the end of rainy months and beginning of autumn season.
