Trekking in Langtang Region

Langtang Trek

Langtang region lies in the central part of Nepal while, the langtang Valley is closer to Kathmandu than any other trekking regions, and is lesser used by both trekkers and locals. Just after the monsoon, this trek gives superb views of the great peak of Langtang Lirung (7246m) which dominates the upper valley and straddles the Tibetan border. There are mainly three major trekking areas-Langtang, Gosaikund and Helambu. In spring time it is an ideal place to spot birds and flowers of the mountasins of Nepal. According to a legend, a Lama chasing after a runaway yak discovered the valley, hence the name- Lang (Tibetan name for YAK), Tang (more currently "Dhang" means to follow). The famous Jugal Himalayan ranges also lies in this region. This whole area is an ancient dwelling place of two major ethinic communities of Tamangs and Sherpa. A visit to the Langtang valley offers an opportunity to explore villages to climb small peak and to visit Glaciers at low elevation. Here is found the famous and beautiful sacred Lake Gosaikund (4300m), during a full-moon festival in August many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims visit this sacred Lake.
The Langtang National Park is rich in Flora and Fauna making it more useful as a destination for Botanical research. Wild flowers like Sky-blue Gentions, Primulas, Epiphytic Orchids, etc are commonly found in these areas. The birds like Buzzards, Hoopoe, Cuckooz, Barbets, Owls, Nightjars, Laughing thrushes' Red-billed and yellow billed Megapics, Capped Sibias, Minivat parakeet can be seen widely on this trek.
There are good opportunities for moderate climbing excursions here, it is advisable to spare some extra days for explorations of the extensive glacier system.
