Upper Mustang is the Trans-Himalayan mountain area having the great influence of Tibetan culture and lifestyle. This 17 days Upper Mustang Trekking route covers the most natural, spiritual and auspicious values of the west Himalayan region of Nepal. The trail route covers some tributaries like Kaligandaki coming from Tibet, Kagbeni and many more. Explore the amazing landscape and built structures like monasteries, local stone houses, etc. Kagbeni (2,858), Syanbochen (3,475m), Lo-Mangthang (3,810m) are the living images which reflects the society of the thousands of years back to the present. Most of the places of the Upper Mustang Trekking route offer us to enjoy the magnificent all-around views of Himalayas. Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and some more other are the giant snow masses just in front of us. Upper Mustang Trekking is one of the remote and magical treks that Nepal has to offer!

Detailed Itinerary


Day 01: Arrive in Kathmandu (1,300m), transfer to hotel, welcome dinner

Once you arrive in Kathmandu airport, our airport representative will meet you with warm reception. Then you will transfer to the selected hotel by private vehicle & will have free time ahead. In the evening, you enjoy welcome dinner with Nepali cuisine and various cultural Dance presentations.

Day 02: Kathmandu sightseeing and trek preparation

Our morning breakfast is followed by sightseeing of some of the world heritage sites of Kathmandu valley. These historic places are renowned for great spiritual and auspicious values. The monuments we cover today are the ancient Durbar Square, Buddhist sacred sites: Swayambhunath & Boudhanath and Hindu divine place Pashupatinath. Afternoon will have pre-trip discussion and shopping of necessary trekking gears. Overnight at hotel.

Day 03: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (823m): 6 hrs drive

Today we transfer to Pokhara by tourist coach. In the morning at around 7am, we leave Kathmandu for Pokhara. Pokhara is a touristic city of Nepal situated at 200km west of Kathmandu. All the way to Pokhara, it is full of diverse landscape, natural property and discrete human settlement. River system, greeneries, agricultural farms, villages and the compatible combination of all these factors is really awesome. On arrival in Pokhara, transfer to the hotel. After the time explore around the city under the pleasing shadow of Mount Fishtail, Annapurna and Manaslu range.

Day 04: Fly to Jomsom & trek to Kagbeni (2,858m): 3-4 hrs

In the morning, first we take our breakfast, transfer to the hotel and then fly to Jomsom. Jomsom is the district’s headquarter of Mustang district. This 20 minutes flight over the mountains offers us to view Himalayan landmasses including 8000m tall mountains too. Jomsom is a large town and is the old age strategic trade center to Tibet.
From Jomsom, our actual trek starts. We continue from the river bed of Kali Gandaki. On crossing Ekley-bhatti village, an easy trail route tracks us to Kagbeni. Kagbeni is the amusing windswept village which lies at the bank of two rivers. Kak Khola is the major tributory of the place coming from Muktinath and later it becomes Kaligandaki by mixing with Mustang Khola. Overnight at Kagbeni.

Day 05: Trek from Kagbeni to Chele (3,050m): 5-6 hrs

Today also we trek along the river side of Kaligandaki. The gradual up and down sandy and windy trail offers to snatch charming natural sceneries. The first settlement that we see today is Tangbe village. Barley, wheat, apple and buckwheat are the main agricultural product of the village. On forward we trek to Chhusang, cross a river and then head towards Chele through a small ridge. Overnight at Chele.

Day 06: Trek from Chele to Syanbochen (3,475m): 6-7 hrs

We trek to Eklo Bhatti through the gradual up & down trail and further we go along plateaus to climb Taklam La pass (3,624m). Tilicho Peak, Damodar danda ,Yakawa kang etc. seems near from Taklam. Descend down to Samar village, climb up, again down and the similar trail route stretches up the Syanbochen. Juniper trees and the running streams welcome us in their own natural way. Juniper is the famous plant for incenses in the local area and has essential value for every auspicious work. Overnight at Syanboche.l

Day 07: Trek from Syanbochen to Ghaymi (3,520m): 5-6 hrs

Our today’s journey start with uphill to Yamda La (3,850m) on passing some Tibetan style villages with little teahouses. We cross some mountain passes inchuding Nyi pass (4,010m). Somewhere in and around the village, we can find fields of barley and some other trees also. We descend down and reach to Ghaymi village to stop today. Ghaymi is the third largest village in the Lo-region.

Day 08: Trek from Ghaymi to Charang (3,500m): 4-5 hrs

After having breakfast, our trek starts by crossing Ghaymi Khola. The Khola is followed by uphill to a plateau. Just a bit ahead, there is a very long Mani wall. Mani wall is the sacred stone of Buddhist which is written the auspicious slogans of Buddhism. On passing the walls, we can meet Charang village in the East. The village has maze fields, willow trees; stone built houses and some Gompas (monastery) also. Overnight in Charang.

Day 09: Trek from Charang to Lo-Mangthang (3,700m): 5-6 hrs

Today we make the trek from Charang to Lo-Mangthang. For the first part of journey we descend down to Charang Chu Canyon, cross the river and then steep up to Lo pass (3,850m). From this windy pass, we get down to reach Lo-Mangthang. Lo-Mangthang is a walled city made by ancient style. The place offers the magnificent view of Tilicho, Nilgiri, Annapurna I and Bhrikuti peak. Overnight at Lo-Mangthang.

Day 10: Explore Lo-Mangthang

Today we explore around the Lo-Mangthang and is a acclimatization day also. We visit to Namgyal Gompa situated at the top of the hill. It is a famous monastery of the local area and also the local court. Next we go the northwest village of Lo-Mangthang called Tingkhar. In alternative, we may go Champa Lakhang “God house”, Thugchen Gompa, Chyaodi Gompa and the four storey local king’s palace. Local people’s lifestyle and their typical traditions make us to enter into the new world of human seniority.

Day 11: Trek from Lo-Mangthang to Drakmar (3,810 m): 6-7 hrs

From the Lo-Mangthang, our return journey start but via different route. The trek forwards to Drakmar on passing Gyakar village. Gyakar houses a more than 1200 years old Ghar Gompa, which is famous for its rock painting and as a wish fulfilling divine place. We are recommended to walk in morning due to dusty wind in the afternoon. Overnight at Drakmar.

Day 12: Trek from Drakmar to Ghiling (3,806m): 5-6 hrs

Our morning breakfast is followed by trek to Ghiling. On the gradual up down rough trail we trek for about 5-6 hours to reach to Ghiling. On reaching we explore around the village admiring local way of life. Night stay in Ghiling.

Day 13: Trek from Ghiling to Chhuksang (3,050m): 5-6 hrs

From the Ghiling we reach to Chhuksang to stop today. We trek for about 5-6 hours on the wonderful land of amazing hills and Himalayan views. Overnight at local teahouse of Chhuksang.

Day 14: Trek from Chhuksang to Jomsom (2,700m): 6-7 hrs

This is our last day Trek which ends by Jomsom. Better start early morning and reach to Kagbeni (2,810m) to have lunch. Further we trek to Jomsom enjoying the vast creations of nature which vibrates the every wave of our sense. Overnight at Jomsom.

Day 15: Fly back to Pokhara

Today in the morning we fly back to Pokhara. This 30 minutes breathtaking flight flies between the gorge of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himal. From Pokhara airport transfer to the hotel and can have leisure time ahead. Better explore around lakes and city.

Day 16: Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu

By the day we drive back to Kathmandu. Enjoying the natural scenarios on the way we cover this 200km travel in 6-7 hours. On arrival, transfer to the hotel. In the rest of time do last minute shopping in Nepal or anything other as per you before farewell dinner.Overnight at hotel.

Day 17: Departure transfer

Our mutual journey ends today. We hope you enjoy the trek a lot. At about three hours prior of your flight time, we give you a departure transfer to the airport. Trekking Mart wishes your best time ahead and hopes you come back again to make your great adventure trip somewhere in Nepal.
